LEAFS REPEAT AS ATLANTIC MIDGET MAJOR CHAMPIONS

April 9, 2007

Cornwall, PEI – The St. John’s Maple Leafs met the Dartmouth Subways on Sunday in the Championship Game of the 2007 Atlantic Midget Major Hockey Championship. In a repeat of last year, the Maple Leafs came away with a one goal victory to earn the right to represent Atlantic Canada at the TELUS National Midget Championship which will take place in Red Deer, Alberta later this month. The Maple Leafs got past the Subways by a score of 3-2 in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the APM Centre.

The Leafs opened the scoring in the first period when Chad Earle snapped the puck past Nick Rose in the Dartmouth net just after the Leafs had done an impressive job killing off a Dartmouth power play. Earle’s goal came at 8:52 with Michael King drawing the assist. Dartmouth would respond at the 13:20 mark when Chris Ivanko put the puck on the St. John’s net and caught a break as Kyle Downer left his post a little too early and the puck beat the Leafs netminder. Overall in the period, Downer would be solid in the Leafs net making 17 saves in the first period off of some glorious scoring chances for the Subways. The teams would enter the first period intermission with the score tied at 1-1 and with the Subways outshooting the Leafs 18-9.

The second period would open with both teams playing with more confidence after using the first period to get a feel for the game. The first good scoring chance came when Christian Morin was sent in alone on Downer after a great pass from the Subways defence. Downer would make the save and the game would remain tied at 1-1. The Leafs would catch a break and take the lead when a Brandon MacDonald shot ricocheted off of Rose and into the back of the Subways net. That goal came at the 15:12 mark. The Leafs would take their 2-1 lead into the third period. The Leafs continued to be out shot by the Subways 23-18 through two periods.

The 3rd period would see the teams exchange goals. Right from an offensive zone faceoff, Michael King would give the Leafs a two goal margin when he managed to trickle a puck into the Subways net. The Subways would get within one when Tyler Noseworthy, on a great individual effort, beat Downer. Noseworthy received the puck after an impressive skating play by Matt Sollows coming out of his zone. Kyle Downer would shut down the Subways the rest of the way to seal with the win for the Leafs. The final shots on goal favored the Subways, 31-24.

Downer was named Player of the Game for the Leafs, while Geoff Hum took the honour for the Subways.
