Hockey Night in Newfoundland A Salute to the NAHA Senior Hockey League

January 27, 2010

After months of planning the St. John’s Minor Hockey Association presents “A Salute to the NAHA Senior Hockey League”. This event involves our 6 Atom House League teams participating in a salute to this historic hockey league.

In 1935 two important hockey events took place. First a committee was formed to oversee hockey competition in the province. This committee was the foundation for what is now Hockey Newfoundland & Labrador (HNL). Second, the Corner Brook Royals played the Guards from St. John’s in the first provincial hockey championships and the right to take home the Herder Memorial Trophy.

This year is the 75th anniversary of these two historic events. In cooperation with HNL, we will recognize these two events by honouring the Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association’s Senior Hockey League and six of its teams.
On Friday January 29th, 2010 we will provide replica NAHA team uniforms to our 6 Atom House League teams. A pre-game ceremony will commence at 6:00 PM, followed by the Gander Flyers playing the Stephenville Jets, the Corner Brook Royals playing the St. John’s Blue Caps and the Port aux Basques Mariners playing the Shamrocks.

The event will be attended by Mr. Gerry Evans, President of Hockey Newfoundland & Labrador, Mr. Don Johnson , Co-Chair of the 75th Anniversary Committee of HNL and former President of Hockey Canada, long time referee Mr. Jack Reardigan, , Mr. Murray Chaplin representing the Fog Devils Booster Club, sponsor of the replica jerseys and other guests. The teams will be coached by former NAHA players including Randy Pearcey, Andy Sullivan, Doug Squires, Ron Cadigan, Dave Wicks and Chris Pitcher.

Our goal is to provide these young minor hockey players with a memory from the 75th anniversary celebration and to commemorate the players, teams and officials from this great era of hockey in Newfoundland & Labrador.
