TEAM ATLANTIC ANNOUNCED FOR NATIONAL UNDER 18 WOMEN'S HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP

September 29, 2009

Saint John, NB - Hockey Canada’s Atlantic Regional Centre, in conjunction with the four Atlantic Hockey Branches is proud to announce, the players who will make up the 2009 edition of the Under 18 Female Team Atlantic.

Team Atlantic is comprised of players from each of the four Atlantic Provinces and will represent Atlantic Canada at the 2009 National Under 18 Hockey Championship, November 4th-8th, in Surrey, British Columbia.

“We are extremely excited to name Team Atlantic for the 2009 National Women's Under 18 Championship,” stated Nic Jansen, General Manager for Team Atlantic. “The twenty players that have been named to the team today will be great ambassadors on and off the ice for Atlantic Canada and I am sure that they will wear the Atlantic Jersey with great pride.”

Team Atlantic Under 18 Female will be comprised of nine players from Nova Scotia, five players from New Brunswick, three players from Newfoundland and Labrador and three players from Prince Edward Island.

“We had 60 female players attend the Team Atlantic Summer Camp Cup this past July in Wolfville, Nova Scotia and we knew at that time, that we had the makings of a great hockey team,” commented Al MacKay, Head Coach for Team Atlantic Under 18. “When you have the top 60 players in the Atlantic region competing to be a part of Team Atlantic, it makes everyone step their game up to the next level. It was not an easy decision to name the twenty players that will make up Team Atlantic, but the staff is confident that we have named twenty players that will allow our team to be successful."

Team Atlantic will have a pre-competition camp in Surrey, BC prior to playing their first tournament game against Saskatchewan at The South Surrey Arena on November 4th. Team Atlantic will also face off against Ontario Red and Ontario Blue in the round robin portion of the event.

“The National Under 18 Women's Hockey Championship will be a great test for our team and we are sure that our players will rise to the Challenge and take their game to the next level,” added MacKay. “Our staff and players have been training and preparing hard for this event and we will ensure that we are ready when the puck drops in Surrey."

Jillian Saulnier of Halifax, NS has been named as the captain of Team Atlantic. "We are pleased to name Jillian as the captain of our team," stated MacKay, "Jillian’s experience, team first attitude and her leadership on and off the ice will be an important part of the success that we will have at the National Championship." Sarah Davis, Jessica McCann and Sarah MacDonnell, will each serve as assistant captains.
