HOCKEY NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR 74th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING CONCLUDES IN GANDER

June 7, 2009

For Immediate Press Release

Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador’s Annual General Meeting concluded at the Albatross Hotel in Gander on Sunday, June 7, 2009 with more than 150 delegates in attendance representing Minor, Junior, Female and Senior Hockey across the province.

A summary of the decisions approved by Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador during this year’s AGM include:

1. The dates for the Female Provincials have been set for March 12-14, 2010
2. Corner Brook Minor Hockey Association has been award the host site for the 2010 Bantam Irving Oil Atlantic Regional Championships from March 25-28, 2010
3. The Gander Minor Hockey Association has been awarded the host site for 2010 Midget Female Atlantic Regional Championships from March 18-21, 2010.
4. A small committee of five senior hockey delegates has been established to propose detailed recommendations in response to the Senior Hockey Summit that was held last January. One task is to consider regulation restrictions on player transfers between leagues to ensure that all teams can be viable. This report is expected for the Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador Fall Meeting on September 18, 2009.
5. The Minor Hockey Association delegates held a workshop on June 5th and the consensus from the delegates in attendance were that regulations are required that would prohibit players from playing on multiple teams while also recognizing that special circumstances exists where this prohibition would not be possible in some cases in order to maintain associations. It was identified that stronger sanctions on players and coaches may reduce some of the violence experienced in this age category.
6. A proposal to increase suspensions for a number of specific infractions in all divisions of hockey was circulated with the intent to review and vote at the Fall Meeting on September 18, 2010. This proposal is an attempt to reduce fighting and violence in hockey.
7. Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador has extended their partnership with Steel Hotels as Title Sponsor of all minor and female provincials until 2012.

A number of schedule announcements were deferred such as the host site and date for the 2010 Veitch Memorial Championships and the 2010 Herder Memorial Championship dates. They will be set at the Fall Meeting in September.
